Thomas Rhett has had pretty good success with songs he’s recorded and released like “It Goes Like This,” “Get Me Some of That” and his current single, “Make Me Wanna,” but he admits there are a few hit songs that got away from him over the years. For instance, he says, “I’ll never forget Dallas Davidson sent me a song called ‘Runnin’ Outa Moonlight’ and said ‘Merry Christmas’, and I didn’t cut it and obviously Randy [Houser] had a huge number one with that song.”
But Thomas says that’s just the way things work out sometimes. As an artist you may get pitched a song you know is going to be a hit, but you can’t use it on the particular album you’re working on, or the timing just isn’t right. Or sometimes the songs just find their way to other people first. Thomas recalls two his dad Rhett Akins wrote that got away. “I remember I was dyin’ to cut ‘Boys ‘Round Here’ when he first wrote it and obviously Blake had a huge hit with it,” says Thomas. “I remember wantin’ ‘Honey Baby’ when he wrote it too. So, there’s just a lotta songs that sometimes you just might get the opportunity to cut and other people do, but in my opinion, it all works how it’s supposed to.”

Thomas Rhett – songs you didn’t cut :45
“Yah, I’ll never forget Dallas Davidson sent me a song called ‘Runnin’ Outa Moonlight’ and said ‘Merry Christmas’, and I didn’t cut it and obviously Randy had a huge number one with that song. But, that happens all the time in this business. A lotta artists get pitched a lotta hit songs and at that time they might not need it for their record, but at the same time, in most artist’s brains you know that if you do pass on one of those songs you’re gonna hear it from somebody else. So that’s just kinda the way the world works in this business. Certain songs that I wanted to cut, that I couldn’t, I remember I was dyin’ to cut ‘Boys ‘Round Here’ when he first wrote it and obviously Blake had a huge hit with it. I remember wantin’ ‘Honey Baby’ when he wrote it too. So, there’s just a lotta songs that sometimes you just might get the opportunity to cut and other people do, but in my opinion, it all works how it’s supposed to.”
