(AUDIO) Thomas Rhett Got Great Career Training From His Dad

Thomas Rhett has only had a record deal and been touring the country for a couple of years, but thanks to his dad, Rhett Akins, who was a successful touring artist in the 90’s, Thomas got a great education about being an artist before he even got started. Thomas says, “I remember goin’ on the road with Dad a whole lot. I remember bein’ that kid that wanted to ask Dad to write me a doctor’s note on Thursday so I could get out on a Friday and hop on the bus. And we would go on the road and I would play drums in a set and go sing a song in a set and so growin’ up with a dad that did that was really cool ‘cause I feel like I got to experience kind of a different life than a bunch of the kids I went to school with.”

One advantage those early experiences gave Thomas was that he was fairly prepared for whatever came his way in his own career. He says, “Now that I’m actually doin’ what he did, there hasn’t been a whole lotta things I haven’t seen before, which was kinda nice.”

Thomas is preparing to release his brand new single, “Make Me Wanna,” to radio, as he works on his sophomore album.

Thomas Rhett – dad’s influence :41
“I remember goin’ on the road with Dad a whole lot. I remember bein’ that kid that wanted to ask Dad to write me a doctor’s note on Thursday so I could get out on a Friday and hop on the bus. And we would go on the road and I would play drums in a set and go sing a song in a set and so growin’ up with a dad that did that was really cool ‘cause I feel like I got to experience kind of a different life than a bunch of the kids I went to school with. And now that I’m actually doin’ what he did, there hasn’t been a whole lotta things I haven’t seen before, which was kinda nice. So, it’s just really cool to have not only a dad, but a mentor and a friend who have kinda helped me along in this process. Him always being side stage right when I come off, either sayin’ ‘That was awesome’ or critiquing me for thirty minutes. So, it’s just been a cool ride.”
