(previously serviced) Charles Esten, who plays Deacon Claybourne, is especially excited about his live performance on the season premiere of Nashville because he’ll be singing a song he co-wrote with Deana Carter called “I Know How to Love You Now.”

Nashville – Charles Esten explains live show :22
“Chris Carmack will be doing a song live at the beginning; I will be doing a song live at the end; the rest of the show will obviously be taped or filmed as we normally do. In those two places from our Bluebird, not the actual one, but from the one we shoot at, we will be going live. To be doing that with a song that I had a hand in writing, this is a day I won’t forget. This is gonna be somethin’.”
Charles Esten explains how “I Know How to Love You Now,” a song he co-wrote with Deana Carter, became part of the season two finale script on Nashville and will now be the song he sings live on the season three premiere on Nashville on September 24th.

Nashville – Charles Esten I Know How to Love You 1:22
“One of the things I love so much about the beginning of this new season is we’re picking up right from where we left, where Deacon was telling Rayna about the changes in him, that he is a new person, that he gets it now. All the mistakes he made, he’s ready to come through that now and one of the lines in that proposal was, ‘I know how to love you now.’ That line actually came from a song that I had written with Deana Carter. Callie Curry was writing the speech that Deacon would give, or the proposal that Deacon would give, and she said to me one night when we were out, she said, ‘I’m about to write that proposal, is there anything you think Deacon might like to say to Rayna?’ And I said, ‘It’s funny you say that, I just wrote this song with Deana called, ‘I Know How to Love You Now’’ and she was like…I saw her eyes twinkle, she like, ‘Can I use that?’ I said, ‘Sure.’ I showed her the song as well and she really, really seemed to love it. And there was even some thought of maybe putting it at the end of the season, but in the end that didn’t happen, but she did use that line, ‘I know how to love you now’. So it was a great, great surprise and a huge thrill when I found at the beginning of this season that she and Dee Johnson, our show runner, had decided that that would be a great song for Deacon to open the season with. And then on top of that, that it’s gonna be done live. So, yah, it’s very exciting. It’s a little daunting as well, but mostly I’m thrilled.”
Charles Esten’s character, Deacon Claybourne, has definitely had his ups and downs in the first two seasons of ABC’s Nashville, but he loves where his character is at mentally and emotionally as season three begins.

Nashville – Charles Esten evolution of Deacon 1:39
“I love where Deacon is been able to go, with the two seasons that we have under our belt. The first season you heard a lot about the other side of Deacon, is the way I put it, that troubled side, the darker side where his demons are. But you didn’t really see it for a long time, you just started to hear about it and then suddenly at the very end of that season, when he got the news about Maddie, about having a daughter, he went off the rails, just like you heard he could, and we went there. We didn’t halfway go there, we went there and you saw the darker side. So then we started season two at, which you would call I guess, rock bottom, literally upside down in a burning truck. They survived that, Deacon and Rayna did physically, but not emotionally, or as a relationship. So he was really starting from on his own, of course with his injury too he didn’t even have his music. So, second season was a great arc of coming back from that, what it is to get up off of your knees and back to living. And what made that even more important was that he found out that he had that daughter so he had somebody that he was sort of trying to get better for. He wanted to be the father that she could be proud of and the man that he knew he wanted to be. So, that’s what second season was, coming back from that worst part of this life and trying to find himself, and I think he made a whole lot of great advances so that by the end of the season, when Luke asked Rayna to marry him, Deacon, where as in the past he would have sort of perhaps slinked away and not really stood up for himself, he knew the differences in himself and he knew that he had changed and that’s what he was able to tell her when he proposed. He knew he was a brand new man.”
