A lot of artists remember a time early in life when they were on stage singing and got the kind of applause or positive feedback from the audience that made them realize they wanted to perform for a living. But Mackenzie Carpenter says she doesn’t really have an early show memory like that because she didn’t usually get applause at her early performances.

“You know, it’s so weird. I can’t really remember back to which performance was like, the performance that made it like an addiction or exciting, I have to pursue this because it did start off as being in church. And so, instead of it being reflected toward me, you know, it was reflected upward. And so I think that it has been an interesting shift, you know, writing my own music, telling my own stories, and having people applaud that. And they’re like, ‘This is actually really good. You have an amazing voice.’ Sometimes it’s hard for me to like, take the compliment (laugh). So far, it hasn’t gone to my head (laugh).”
