Jonathan Jackson plays Avery Barkley on ABC’s Nashville, and while his character seems to be on a better path now, there was a time when he was kind of a jerk. Jonathan says he has experienced people responding to him as Avery in real life. “I’d be in the grocery store, walking down the street or whatever and people would come up and they’d be like, ‘Man, your character is just a jerk.’ Or sometimes they wouldn’t even say ‘your character,’” he laughs. But in some ways he takes that kind of thing as a compliment. “It just means that the character is coming off the way it’s supposed to and people are responding and invested in the show. It’s definitely not something I’ve ever taken personally,” says Jonathan. You can see Nashville every Wednesday night on ABC, although it will be taking next week off for ABC’s coverage of the CMA Awards.

Jonathan Jackson – people don’t like character :27
“Yeah, I got some of that, early on. I’d be in the grocery store, walking down the street or whatever and people would come up and they’d be like, “Man. Your character is just a jerk.” Or sometimes they wouldn’t even say ‘your character’. (laughter) But I would take it as a compliment because it just means that the character is coming off the way it’s supposed to and people are responding and invested in the show. It’s definitely not something I’ve ever taken personally.”
