CURRENT SINGLE: “Old School’s In”
If you listen to Heath Sander’s debut EP, Common Ground, featuring four great songs all co-written by him, you might be surprised to learn that it was only a few short years ago that Heath even started writing songs. “In my early 20s I tried to write a couple of songs and they were absolutely terrible,” Heath says with a laugh. “And so, I put my pen down and I never picked it up again. And I honestly hadn’t ever tried to write a song up until, what, three years ago.”
For no reason in particular, Heath decided one Sunday morning that that was going to be the day he’d try writing again. “(I) was like, you know what man, you might as well try your hand at writin’ a song. It’s Sunday and you ain’t got nothin’ to do. So, I sit down and wrote my first song, and that ended up being the reason that I’m here. Pretty good odds on the first song there.”
For much of his life, Heath never considered music a career choice. He loved music, and it got him through the long, lonely days of working in the Arkansas oil fields, but he says, “I guess I’ve always wanted to write songs, I just didn’t know that I was capable of it. And now that I’ve realized I am, golly, it’s life-changing. It’s freakin’ awesome.”
Heath will turn 38 in July, which means, he only started writing songs in his mid 30’s. And now that he lives in Nashville, he loves writing all the time, by himself, with co-writers or however he can.
