(AUDIO) HEATH SANDERS RECALLS THE FIRST SECULAR ALBUM HE WAS BRAVE ENOUGH TO BUY WITH HIS OWN MONEY

CURRENT SINGLE: “Old School’s In”

Heath Sanders grew up in a very strict household with his dad, who is a Pentecostal preacher.  That meant no watching TV, movies or sports, and no listening to music outside of the church, or what some would call secular music.  Fortunately for Heath, his parents split up when he was younger, and he says, “Mom really wasn’t a churchgoer, so every other weekend I did get to go to mom’s house and get to listen to Garth and George Strait, and all the greats.”

Finally, one summer in high school, after going to his mom’s and listening to the radio, Heath says, “I eventually worked up the nerve to buy me a secular album. And, I think I was 15 when I walked into Walmart. I’d saved up enough money to buy Matchbox 20, Yourself or Someone Like You, an amazing, amazing album.”

Heath knew taking that album back to his dad’s house was absolutely forbidden, so he says, “When I bought it, I went and locked myself in my bedroom at my mom’s house, and I did not come out until I knew every lyric. And I still to the day, know every lyric to every song on that album. It’s still one of the greatest albums ever.”

Now, ironically,  Heath is making the kind of music he wasn’t allowed to listen to at his dad’s house, and his debut single, “Old School’s In,” is steadily making its way up the charts.
