If you’ve listened to Thomas Rhett’s new album, Tangled Up, then you know it features a wide range of songs, including a few that push the envelope of country music. When people ask Thomas how he would classify or categorize his style of country music, he says, ““Gosh, I would just say you can’t. I would say, do me a favor and go listen to the Top 20 right now and you tell me which of those songs sound remotely close to a Merle Haggard song, or whatever Country you wish it was. It’s just not like that anymore.”
Thomas realizes some people like to put music in neat little boxes like Pop Country or Motown Country or Bro Country, but he says he’s simply making music that he likes and that he thinks will appeal to his fans. “There’s definitely songs on my record that definitely sound a lot more traditional than the other half of the record. So, I just try to do a lot of everything on there. I tried to put a little bit of everything on this record, and there’s a song for everybody on there.”
An example of one of the more traditional sounding songs on Tangled Up is Thomas’ latest single, “Die A Happy Man.”

Thomas Rhett – can’t put sound in box :52
“Gosh, I would just say you can’t. I would say, do me a favor and go listen to the Top 20 right now and you tell me which of those songs sound remotely close to a Merle Haggard song, or whatever Country you wish it was. It’s just not like that anymore. I think like Chris Janson is the countriest song on the radio, but then you got Dan + Shay, who I think are super progressive with their records. So many people just try to put us into this like, it’s Pop Country or it’s Motown Country or it’s Bro Country. It’s like, there’s so many different forms, and Pop means popular. Pop doesn’t mean Lady Gaga, that’s not what that means, it just means popular. So if you’ve got popular Country, sorry, that’s just what I like to sing and there’s definitely songs on my record that definitely sound a lot more traditional than the other half of the record. So, I just try to do a lot of everything on there. I tried to put a little bit of everything on this record, and there’s a song for everybody on there.”
