Thomas Rhett’s new album, Tangled Up, is being released this Friday, and some of the songs on the new project definitely push the boundaries, but for Thomas there really were no boundaries when he was recording the album. He says, “I wasn’t even trying to like, teeter-totter on any line, ‘cause there wasn’t a line in my head. For me, a song like ‘Tangled Up’ or a song like ‘I Feel Good’ or a song like ‘Party Like You’re On Vacation’, those were just songs that fell out as we were writing. I love them so much that I hated for them to just be really cool songs that don’t get to be put on a record because they have to fit into a certain box. If that makes any sense.”
Fortunately, Thomas’ record label was incredibly supportive of his creative direction and pretty much told him to make the album he wanted to make. Thomas says, “I’m 25 years old and I’m cuttin’ songs that I love and that make me happy. We’ve tried out a handful of ‘em live and it’s amazing to see, just the response of fans of songs they’ve never heard before, just movin’ and dancin’ to ‘em and lovin’ ‘em.”
For anybody looking for a descriptive sentence or line to summarize Tangled Up, Thomas says, “It’s really hard to describe and I wish that there was like an epic sentence that I had come up with to describe it, but there’s not. I think it kind a changes every time I talk about it.”
But Thomas says what he would tell anyone who buys Tangled Up is, “If you’re already a fan of mine, then I would just say have fun. If you’re strictly listening to it so you can bash it, I would say, give it more than just a listen, and really just try to like expand your horizons a little bit, ‘cause it’s a lot to digest for sure. You can’t listen to it and tell me that you don’t have a good time listenin’ to it.”

I was super blessed by the label just to be like, ‘Hey, you go do your thing, we trust ya.’ I think ‘Make Me Wanna’ was a big confidence builder, for the label, and knowing that a song like that can work, and a song like ‘Crash and Burn’ can work, we were just like, ‘I’m just gonna make the album I wanna make.’ I’m 25 years old and I’m cuttin’ songs that I love and that make me happy. We’ve tried out a handful of ‘em live and it’s amazing to see, just the response of fans of songs they’ve never heard before, just movin’ and dancin’ to ‘em and lovin’ ‘em.”
