When you first hear Thomas Rhett’s latest single, “Crash and Burn,” it would be easy, with its progressive sound dance rhythm to think that he wrote it, but in fact, Thomas says, “I didn’t actually write the song, I don’t know how many people know that. But actually, Chris Stapleton (and Jesse Frasure) wrote that song, if you can ever imagine that. You know, especially hearing that whole ‘Traveller’ album, which is like top ten favorite albums of all time. For that same guy to have written ‘Crash and Burn’ is pretty crazy.”
Chris has been hailed by many as one of the most soulful, earthy, bluesy, best singers in Nashville, so you might not expect such a danceable groove to come from him, but Thomas says the version of song you hear on the radio is pretty close to the demo he heard when he first got his hands on the song. He says, “We actually tried to copy it as well as we could, except for vocals had to be altered. Chris is the best singer that ever existed, to me. So, that was the biggest part of tryin’ to make a Thomas Rhett song was, how was I going to sing it compared to how Chris sang it? But man, that demo, it just blew me away. It was the most different thing I’d heard all year and I was like, ‘I have to cut this song’.”
“Crash and Burn” is the lead single off of Thomas’ forthcoming album, Tangled Up, which will be out on September 25th.

Thomas Rhett is playing on the Grand Ole Opry stage in Nashville on Tuesday (8/18). He’s also playing on Florida Georgia Line’s “Anything Goes Tour” this weekend with shows all over Texas.
